PROCLAIMING PURITY IN PANAMA
November 14-21, 2010

Panama is a melting pot of many races with great diversity and potential, making it the "Bridge of the World" and "Heart of the Universe" because of its strategic location and the Canal. According to Operation World, 19.3% of its population (over 3 million) is now evangelical Christian. The power of the Gospel continues to make its inroads into the hearts of Panamanians who are still lost and without Christ.

Charles Winters (a retired missionary) and I had the privilege of proclaiming the Good News in Panama City and the surrounding areas, speaking a total of 18 times to congregations, church leaders, youth and men.

God richly blessed His Word as people and church leaders sought spiritual renewal, heart purity, and a lifestyle affecting marriage, the family, and relationships at work and at school. Nine people sought Christ for the first time. A highlight service was the men's meeting (singles and married) who made commitments toward purity and fidelity in a society where promiscuity and marital infidelity abounds -- with the fourth highest divorce rate in the world.

An added blessing was staying with two different families, and the opportunities that arose to interact, pray and counsel in the churches.

Pray for Panama that God's Spirit will continue to work in His church, and that lost society will continue to be attracted and drawn to Christ through the purity and lifestyle of His people.

SURINAME RESPONDED!
September, 2010

Last week I returned from Suriname where Dr. Dan Spaite (medical doctor and conference speaker) ministered in the city of Moengo and Paramaribo, September 5-12. God wonderfully blessed as people came to Christ and Christians and church leaders sought heart purity and spiritual renewal.

Suriname, once a Dutch colony, is a small country (population between 400,000 and 500,000) located above Brazil and between French and British Guiana. It's official language is Dutch with a melting pot of cultures.

The following are pictures and an article written by Lloyd Djendje, a newspaper reporter, which in essence tells the story of what took place in both cities.

Revival Brings Leaders and Church Members to Their Knees

The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ has started an awakening in the body of Christ in the Dutch speaking nation of Suriname, South America. Kneeling down with faces to the ground and praying fervently to God were symptoms of the beginning of a revival. Leaders from different denominations in Suriname have knelt together to ask God passionately for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. How they wanted a renewal first in their own hearts, so that they might influence the rest of their family, church, neighborhood and country. This took place during the Seminar on Christian Holiness that was given by David Harriman and Dan Spaite of the Francis Asbury Society, Wilmore, Kentucky. The Suriname Wesleyan District hosted a crusade from 5-12 September 2010 in the capital city Paramaribo and in the town of Moengo. From September 5-7 during the day services, Dr. Spaite delivered Spirit filled messages to the church leaders in Moengo. Pastor Martin Harderwijk of the Albina Wesleyan Church stated, "It was awesome to hear my father praying loudly in a crowd of people that came out to accept Christ in Moengo. Years ago my daddy became sick and went many times to the wicked doctor (witch doctor), but on that day he met the Doctor of all doctors. I slept in his room that night to give him advice on his walk with Christ. God is good to me. He has heard my prayer of many years. According to Reverend Andre Pinas of the Moengo Wesleyan church, God has united His children in Moengo to evangelize a lost city fraught with crime, low poverty, etc. The church understood more than ever that holy living is the key to God's miracle in ministry.

Leaders in Paramaribo, the capital city, believe that the Holy Spirit will continue moving their lives and city. "It is time for a change in the way of thinking in our churches. We must win people not for the church, but first for the Lord Jesus Christ," said Reverend Levi Iengibe, districts Superintendent of the Wesleyan Church Suriname. "I could not be in a better place than this holy Ghost meeting," says Pastor Ingrid Nothan of the Moravian Church. "I am blessed by the way the brothers preached on holiness and especially not of wonders."

A group of young Wesleyans gathered together during a break and said, "We need this kind of refreshment every year. Our hearts are burning inside." On Saturday night Rev. Harriman spoke to a crowd of young people on the subject, "Purity Under Pressure." Many recommitted their life to Christ and pledged to live a clean life without sex before marriage.

On Sunday morning on the 12th of September after preaching on forgiveness, everybody prayed for a pure heart that forgives. A lady went forward to pray for a new relationship with her husband. For months they have had marriage problems that remained unsolved.

CUBA REPORT
April 2-13, 2010

It was my great privilege, along with Rev. Tom Dunbar (retired WGM missionary) to represent FAS in Cuba. Through the generosity and cooperation of the Methodist Church headquarters in Havana, we were able to secure our religious visas so that we could freely enter and minister on the island.

A LIVE CHURCH

The void created by communism over the past fifty years is being filled by a rapid growth of Christianity in spite of government restrictions and repression. According to Operation World, there could possibly be up to 4,500 evangelical congregations and 10,000 house groups in 54 denominations throughout the island. The government prohibits the construction of church edifices.

A high percentage of the new Christians are young people despite Marxist propaganda and atheistic ideology which has been prevalent over the years. And even though the evangelical community is alive and doing well, most of the population (over 11 million) still has no meaningful contact with the church. There is much work to be done still.

A great source of strength and encouragement to many Christians has been the international Christian broadcasting in Spanish from Latin America. Any kind of broadcasting from Cuba, whether on radio or TV is still not permitted.

NEW AND ATTRACTIVE

During our eleven day stay on the island, Tom Dunbar had the honor of teaching a class on holiness at the Methodist Seminary in downtown Havana. He kept very busy with approximately four hours of teaching every day for an entire week. Even though the church is rooted in Wesleyan tradition, its knowledge of holiness is very limited. The students were exposed for the first time to its beautiful and Biblical truth, not only as an experience but as a way of life. And hopefully, what they learned will have a ripple effect as they minister to their congregation. The seminary library now has in their possession practically all of the FAS books that have been translated into Spanish.

WONDERFUL RESPONSE

I was privileged to speak over 15 times in established churches, house churches, which also involved sessions with the youth, married couples and church leaders. Every service was emotionally charged as believers expressed their love for Jesus through praise and worship. At one meeting, I was given the pulpit after 10:00 in the evening. When it comes to church services, people are more event conscious than time conscious. What a beautiful way to give room and time to the work of the Holy Spirit. The Bible teachings and preaching were gratefully received. As a result of the evangelistic meetings, over twenty people sought Christ for the first time, and others were spiritually reconciled and restored.

The love and kindness of the people was so wonderfully shown during our entire stay. And their generous hospitality was repeatedly expressed through their daily servings of hot rice dishes and black coffee, Cuban style. Both Tom and I established some lasting relationships with the people.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

Bright ministry prospects lay ahead for FAS in Cuba. There is absolutely no end of what can be done as it pertains to evangelism and teaching on this needy island. The words of Paul are so appropriate as he said, "For a great and effective door has been opened to me...." (1 Corinthians 16:9). May we continue to walk through the doors He opens.

MEXICO REPORT
February 5-15, 2010

Mexico is the largest Spanish speaking nation in Latin America with a population more than 100 million, over half being less than 20 years of age. Mexico City, the capital, with a population of more than 20 million, is the largest city in the world. According to Operation World, 6.20% of the Mexican population is now protestant. The figures continue to rise.

 MINISTRY IN SEVEN CITIES

It was my privilege to minister with World Gospel Mission, the Transformation Church in Irapuato, and the developing church plants in Queretaro, Aguas Calientes, Nueva Floresta, Pueblo Nuevo, and Leon. All of these cities are located in the heart of Mexico, a highly industrialized region of the country.

While in Mexico, I stayed with Bill and Lydia Allshouse, a gracious and committed couple, who oversee the work of World Gospel Mission for all of Mexico and who work closely with the national church. Bill and I traveled overland to the above cities where I spoke a total of 16 times to developing congregations, men, women, youth, and married couples, including recordings of messages and speaking on live radio.

 RESCUED

Central Mexico is known for its financial and traditional ties to Roman Catholicism, which is deeply entrenched and entangled in idolatry and paganism. Other problems also prevail, as seen in the city of Queretaro where you find the highest divorce rate in Mexico and a high level of alcoholism. But the Gospel is making its inroads, strongholds are being broken, and lives are being rescued and transformed. This was repeated again as over 20 people found Christ during my preaching circuit.

AN OPEN DOOR

In cooperation with World Gospel Mission and the national church, I look forward to returning to Mexico later this year for further evangelistic efforts in the city of Saltillo and surrounding areas.

David H. Harriman
